Multi-Stage Water Pump Guide

PROTEGE 5S Multi-Stage High-Pressure Water Pump

The PROTEGE 5S is a mains-powered, five-stage centrifugal water pump intended for applications where higher pressure and automatic on-demand operation are useful, including rainwater-tank supply and garden irrigation.

The exact model reviewed here is SKU PMPELEPROA5S1. The current manufacturer manual identifies it as a 1-inch 5-stage water pump. Published figures include a 64m maximum head, 9000L/h maximum pump rate, 2500W / 3.5hp rated input and a maximum suction lift of approximately 4m.

Those headline maximums need to be interpreted carefully. Maximum flow and maximum head are not normally available at the same operating point. Pipe length, vertical lift, fittings, valves, filters and irrigation equipment all add resistance, so a correctly sized system matters more than simply choosing the largest number on the box.

Testing statement: Firebusters has not personally performance-tested this pump. Specifications and installation guidance are based on the current Edisons product listing and the current PROTEGE 5S instruction manual checked in October 2026.

64m Head and 9000L/h Are Maximum Figures, Not a Guaranteed Pair

The two figures most likely to attract buyers are the 64m maximum head and 9000L/h maximum flow rate.

They should not be read as meaning the pump will deliver 9000L/h while simultaneously pushing water through a 64m total head. Centrifugal-pump flow generally falls as total dynamic head rises.

Total dynamic head includes more than the vertical distance between the tank and sprinkler. It also includes pressure required at the outlet and losses through pipe, bends, tees, valves, filters and fittings.

The current PROTEGE manual does not include a pump-curve graph. Without a model-specific curve showing flow at different head values, Firebusters would not calculate or promise a particular sprinkler flow at a particular elevation.

Buyer approach: work out the required flow and total dynamic head for your installation first. If performance at a specific duty point is critical, request the current pump curve or written performance confirmation before purchase.

Why Five Stages Matter

The current manual identifies the unit as a five-stage pump. A multi-stage centrifugal pump uses several impeller stages in series to build pressure more effectively than a comparable single-stage arrangement.

That makes this type of pump relevant where a system needs useful pressure after overcoming elevation and pipe losses, such as rainwater-tank garden systems, larger sprinkler layouts, longer pipe runs, split-level properties and outbuildings supplied from a remote tank.

A five-stage design does not remove the need for correct pipe sizing. Restrictive suction plumbing, undersized delivery pipe or too many fittings can still reduce useful output.

Self-Priming Does Not Mean “No Priming Required”

This is an important point from the PROTEGE manual.

The pump is described as self-priming, but the manual explicitly explains that self-priming does not mean the pump automatically draws water from a dry system on first use.

For the initial prime, the priming bolt is removed and the pump body is filled completely with clean water before the bolt is refitted.

Once correctly primed, the self-priming design is intended to retain water so that normal stopping and restarting does not require the same process every time.

The manual also notes that the pump may need to be primed again after a long period without use or if air has entered the plumbing.

This distinction matters because running a pump without an adequate water supply can damage pumping components even where protective functions are advertised.

Maximum Suction Lift Is About 4m

The manufacturer manual states a maximum suction lift of roughly 4 metres and says the pump should not be installed higher than 4m above the water source.

This is a suction-side limit, not the same thing as the 64m maximum delivery head.

For a rainwater tank beside the pump, suction lift may be small. A pump installed significantly above the source has a harder task because it must lift water to the pump before it can pressurise the delivery side.

The manual also requires the intake pipe to be airtight, angled slightly upwards towards the pump to avoid air locks, and fitted with a foot valve. The suction pipe must not be smaller than the pump intake.

Air leaks on the suction side can cause poor priming and weak performance even when there is no obvious external water leak.

Automatic Controller and Adjustable Cut-In Pressure

The package includes a separate pump controller that mounts to the pump through the supplied brass connection arrangement shown in the manual.

The controller provides automatic on/off operation in response to demand. This is useful for systems where opening a tap or irrigation valve should start water delivery without manually switching the motor each time.

The manual also provides a cut-in-pressure adjustment. A flat-head dial on the pressure switch can be turned towards plus to increase the cut-in pressure or towards minus to reduce it.

Pressure adjustment should be approached cautiously. Increasing switching pressure does not create unlimited pump capacity, and the rest of the plumbing system must be suitable for the pressures involved.

Edisons also lists a no-water shutdown function and built-in thermal protection. Those are useful protection claims, but they do not remove the need for correct priming and a reliable water source.

Important Port-Size Conflict

The current Edisons specification table lists both the inlet and outlet as 25mm.

The current PROTEGE manual for PMPELEPROA5S1 instead lists 25mm inlet and 30mm outlet.

Because fittings are an installation-critical detail, Firebusters would not choose one of those figures and present it as certain.

Before ordering pipe fittings, valves or reducers: confirm the actual thread and port size on the current pump supplied by Edisons, particularly if you are preparing the plumbing before the pump arrives.

Install It Dry — Do Not Treat the Pump as Weatherproof

The original draft described the unit as outdoor-rated. The current manual gives more restrictive installation guidance.

It says the pump must be installed in a dry, well-ventilated place with an ambient temperature no higher than 40°C. The general safety section also says the equipment is not weather-proof and should not be stored in damp or humid locations.

The pump should be fixed horizontally to a solid, flat surface using suitable bolts to reduce vibration.

The manual also requires an RCD, safety switch or equivalent earth-leakage protection and warns against operating electrical equipment in wet conditions.

For a rainwater-tank installation, that means providing suitable shelter and electrical protection rather than leaving the pump exposed beside the tank.

Water Hammer and Delivery Plumbing

The manual recommends fitting a non-return valve between the delivery outlet and a flow-control gate valve to reduce water hammer if the pump stops suddenly.

It goes further when the delivery water column exceeds 20 metres, stating that this measure is compulsory.

The delivery pipe should be sized for the actual flow and pressure required at the take-off points, while pipework should be supported so its weight or movement does not place stress on the pump body.

These details are important in longer property installations. A powerful pump connected to poorly supported or undersized plumbing can still produce disappointing performance or create unnecessary stress on fittings.

What Is Included?

The current Edisons box list is straightforward:

  • 1 × PROTEGE 5S water pump;
  • 1 × pump controller; and
  • 1 × user’s manual.

Do not assume the package includes a suction foot valve, external filter, non-return valve, pressure vessel, irrigation manifold, hoses or all plumbing fittings required for your installation.

The manual specifically calls for a foot valve on the suction line, so include that and other required plumbing components when planning the full project cost.

Not Suitable for Drinking Water

The current retailer listing and current manual both state that the pump is not suitable for drinking water.

This is more important than simply saying potable-water certification is unknown.

Firebusters therefore would not recommend using this exact model to supply drinking-water taps or any application requiring a potable-water pump.

Use it only for applications compatible with the manufacturer’s water-quality and installation requirements, and select an appropriately certified product where potable water is involved.

Continuous Duty — With an Important Documentation Caveat

Both Edisons and the current specification page in the manual list the duty cycle as continuous.

However, the same manual includes a general safety statement saying equipment covered by the manual is designed for domestic use only, while Edisons markets the pump for residential and commercial applications.

Because those statements do not align perfectly, Firebusters would not turn the continuous-duty specification into a claim that the pump is an industrial or heavy-commercial machine.

Continuous duty means the published duty classification permits continuous operation within the pump’s specified operating conditions. It does not remove limits relating to temperature, water supply, electrical installation, pressure or maintenance.

Protection-Class Documentation Also Conflicts

The Edisons specification table currently lists protection class as IP54/IP55, while the manual lists IP44/IP54.

It is not clear from the current documents which figure applies to which component.

Rather than using the higher number to justify outdoor exposure, follow the more explicit installation instructions in the manual: keep the pump dry, ventilated and protected from damp conditions.

Maintenance

The manual describes relatively modest routine maintenance when the installation is correct.

Useful checks include:

  • keep the foot valve clean;
  • inspect plumbing for air or water leaks;
  • check electrical cable and controller condition;
  • keep the pump dry and ventilated;
  • inspect mounting bolts and pipe supports;
  • drain the pump if freezing conditions are possible; and
  • if the unit will remain unused for a long period, empty it, rinse with clean water and store it dry.

The manual says any work on the pump must be carried out only after it has been disconnected from mains power.

If the supply cord is damaged, it should be replaced by the manufacturer or a similarly qualified technician rather than repaired casually.

Who Is This Pump Best Suited To?

ApplicationFit
Rainwater tank to garden irrigationPotentially suitable where clean water, head and required flow are within the pump’s real operating range.
Longer property pipe runsFive-stage design and 64m maximum head make it worth assessing, but friction losses must be included.
Automatic on-demand garden supplyIncluded controller provides automatic starting and stopping when correctly installed.
Water source more than about 4m below pumpNot a suitable layout according to the published suction-lift limit.
Drinking-water supplyNot suitable; the current documentation explicitly excludes drinking water.
Exposed outdoor installationNot as an exposed unit; the manual requires a dry, well-ventilated installation location.

Buyer and Installation Checklist

  • Confirm the exact SKU is PMPELEPROA5S1.
  • Confirm that your application is suitable for a five-stage 240V pump.
  • Use 64m as a maximum head figure, not a promised working pressure at every flow.
  • Use 9000L/h as a maximum pump-rate figure, not a guaranteed flow at 64m head.
  • Obtain a current pump curve if a precise duty point is important.
  • Keep suction lift within the approximately 4m published limit.
  • Prime the pump with clean water before first operation.
  • Fit a foot valve on the suction line as instructed.
  • Keep suction plumbing airtight and correctly sized.
  • Confirm the actual outlet size because the retailer and manual currently conflict.
  • Support pipework so it does not load the pump body.
  • Consider water-hammer control, particularly where the delivery column exceeds 20m.
  • Install the pump horizontally on a solid, flat mounting surface.
  • Install it in a dry, well-ventilated location below 40°C ambient temperature.
  • Use appropriate RCD / safety-switch electrical protection.
  • Do not use the pump for drinking-water supply.
  • Remember the standard warranty is currently 12 months, not two years.

Firebusters Practical Recommendation

The PROTEGE 5S is best considered as a higher-head clean-water pressure pump rather than simply a “3.5hp” answer to every irrigation problem.

Its confirmed strengths include a five-stage design, 64m maximum head, 9000L/h published maximum flow, stainless pump body and shaft, automatic controller, adjustable cut-in pressure and continuous-duty specification.

The manual also provides useful installation limits that should shape the buying decision: about 4m maximum suction lift, initial priming, a dry and ventilated mounting location, a foot valve on the intake and careful sizing of both suction and delivery plumbing.

The main weakness is incomplete performance data at different operating points. The current manual does not provide a pump curve, and there are also documentation conflicts over port sizes and IP ratings.

Our recommendation: consider this pump where you need automated clean-water irrigation or tank supply with a genuinely higher head requirement and can install it correctly in a dry, protected location. If you need a guaranteed flow at a particular elevation or pressure, obtain the current pump curve or written duty-point confirmation before purchasing rather than relying on the maximum head and flow figures alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this definitely a five-stage pump?

Yes. The current manual supplied from the Edisons listing identifies the product as a 1-inch 5-stage water pump.

What is the maximum flow rate?

The current manual lists a maximum pump rate of 9000L/h, equivalent to 150L/min. Actual flow falls as system head and resistance increase.

What is the maximum head?

The published maximum head is 64m. This is a maximum endpoint, not a guarantee of maximum flow at 64m.

How far can it suck water vertically?

The manual gives a maximum suction lift of roughly 4m and says the pump should not be installed more than 4m above the water source.

Does self-priming mean I can start it dry?

No. The manual says an initial prime is required. Remove the priming bolt and fill the pump with clean water before first operation as instructed.

Does it start automatically?

Yes. A separate automatic pump controller is included. The manual also describes adjustment of the controller’s cut-in pressure.

What size are the inlet and outlet?

The current documents conflict. Edisons lists 25mm for both, while the current manual lists a 25mm inlet and 30mm outlet. Confirm the actual ports before buying fittings.

Can I leave it outside beside my rainwater tank?

Not exposed to the weather. The manual requires a dry, well-ventilated installation location and says the equipment is not weather-proof.

Can it pump drinking water?

No. The current manual and product listing explicitly state that it is not suitable for drinking water.

What warranty does it have?

Edisons currently lists a 12-month standard warranty. A paid Extended Care option is offered separately and currently adds one additional year.
