Stationary Petrol Engine Replacement Guide

Baumr-AG SX220E 7HP Petrol Engine

The Baumr-AG SX220E is a 210cc horizontal-shaft petrol engine designed as a replacement power unit for compatible stationary machinery. It combines key electric starting with recoil backup, a 4-stroke OHV layout, low-oil shutdown and a 3600rpm governed operating speed.

The current published figures are 7HP maximum output, 6HP rated output, 14Nm maximum torque, 3.6L fuel capacity, 0.6L engine-oil capacity and 17kg product weight.

The important word with any replacement engine is compatible. A 7HP label does not make two engines interchangeable. Shaft diameter, shaft length, keyway, bolt pattern, rotation, governed speed, clearances, controls and driven-equipment requirements all need to match.

Testing statement: Firebusters has not personally tested this engine. Specifications and safety information are based on current Baumr-AG and Edisons product information checked in September 2026.

The Most Important Missing Specification: Shaft Dimensions

The current Baumr-AG and Edisons product pages identify the SX220E as a horizontal-shaft stationary engine and describe the range as using a common-style shaft and footprint.

However, the current published specification does not provide the actual output-shaft diameter, usable shaft length, keyway width/depth or mounting-hole dimensions for this exact SX220E listing.

Those figures are critical when replacing an existing engine.

Firebusters recommendation: do not order the SX220E on horsepower alone. Measure your existing engine and driven component, then obtain the current SX220E shaft and mounting drawing from the seller if those dimensions are not visible in the documentation supplied to you.

7HP Maximum vs 6HP Rated Output

This engine is marketed as a 7HP model, but the current specification distinguishes between maximum output of 7HP / 5.1kW and rated output of 6HP / 4.4kW.

That distinction matters when selecting an engine for continuous work. Maximum output is not the same thing as the power the engine is intended to deliver continuously under normal rated conditions.

If the driven machine originally used a particular rated output, speed and torque characteristic, compare those requirements with the replacement engine rather than simply matching the largest horsepower number printed in the advertisement.

Using an engine that is under-sized can result in poor performance or repeated overloading. Using one that is physically larger or more powerful can also create compatibility problems with belts, pumps, clutches, guards, frames and driven components.

3600rpm: Why Governed Speed Matters

The SX220E is currently specified at 3600rpm. A replacement engine should match the operating-speed requirements of the equipment it is driving.

This is particularly important where engine speed directly controls:

  • pump output;
  • compressor speed;
  • generator frequency;
  • belt and pulley speed;
  • hydraulic-pump flow;
  • blade or cutter speed; or
  • other rotating machinery.

Do not modify or defeat a governor simply to make a replacement engine match unsuitable equipment. The driven machine may have maximum-speed limits of its own, and overspeed can damage both the engine and attached equipment.

If the old machine uses pulleys or a reduction system, compare pulley diameters and required driven speed before installation.

What Machinery Could It Replace?

Baumr-AG lists stationary engines of this type for applications including water pumps, air compressors, log splitters, pressure cleaners, generators and other construction or agricultural equipment.

That list should be treated as examples of possible applications, not a guarantee that this engine fits every machine in those categories.

A water pump may require a different coupling from a log splitter. A compressor may use belt drive. A generator head may depend on an exact governed speed. A pressure washer pump may require a specific shaft length and mounting arrangement.

The safe approach is to identify the original engine model, measure the mechanical interface and understand the load before choosing the replacement.

Replacement Engine Compatibility Checklist

CheckWhy It Matters
Shaft diameterMust suit the coupling, pulley, clutch or driven component.
Shaft lengthToo short or too long can prevent correct alignment or guarding.
KeywayKey dimensions must match the driven hub or pulley.
Rotation / output directionThe driven equipment must operate in the correct direction.
Mounting footprintBolt holes and base dimensions must suit the frame.
Engine dimensionsAllow space for fuel tank, muffler, air cleaner, recoil starter and service access.
Rated powerShould meet the continuous load requirements of the machine.
Operating speedThe SX220E is listed at 3600rpm; driven equipment may require a particular speed.
ControlsThrottle, stop, key-start wiring and control-cable arrangements must be suitable.
GuardingRotating shafts, belts and couplings may need guards after installation.

Key Start Plus Recoil Backup

The SX220E has both key start and recoil starting. This can be useful on stationary equipment because electric starting avoids repeated pull starting, while recoil provides a mechanical backup in some circumstances.

The current specification lists a 12V 18Ah compatible battery, but the battery is not supplied.

That means installation planning should include a suitable battery location, secure battery restraint and correctly routed wiring. Cables must be kept clear of the exhaust, rotating shafts, belts and other hot or moving parts.

The engine should not be assumed to include your machine’s existing remote-start controls, throttle cable, shutdown wiring or battery mounting hardware. Check these items separately.

Fuel and Engine Oil

The SX220E is specified for regular unleaded petrol of 95 RON or higher. Fuel capacity is 3.6 litres.

The engine-oil capacity is 0.6 litres, and the current specification lists several non-synthetic multigrade oils including 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-30 and 15W-40.

Oil is not something to treat as an afterthought. A stationary engine may operate for extended periods under steady load, and oil level should be checked according to the operating instructions.

The SX220E includes low-oil shutdown protection. That feature can help protect the engine if oil becomes insufficient, but it is not a substitute for routine checks and correct servicing.

Never refuel a hot or running engine. Keep petrol away from ignition sources and wipe up spills before restarting.

Carbon Monoxide: Operate Combustion Engines Outdoors

A petrol engine produces exhaust containing carbon monoxide, an invisible and dangerous gas.

Do not operate a stationary petrol engine inside a house, garage, shed, shipping container or other enclosed or poorly ventilated area simply because doors or windows are open.

The exhaust outlet should also be positioned so fumes cannot enter occupied areas through doors, windows or ventilation openings.

For equipment that must operate indoors, choose a power system specifically designed for that environment rather than improvising ventilation around a petrol engine.

Guarding Is Part of the Installation

A replacement engine may fit the frame and still leave the finished machine unsafe.

Exposed output shafts, couplings, pulleys and belts can catch clothing, fingers or loose objects. If the original machine had guards, those guards need to remain effective after the replacement engine is fitted.

Also check that the muffler and cylinder do not sit too close to fuel hoses, plastic covers, wiring or other heat-sensitive components.

Firebusters approach: assess the completed machine, not just the engine. A mechanically running installation is not necessarily a safe installation.

17kg Weight and Installation Space

The current listing gives the SX220E a product weight of 17kg and dimensions of approximately 43 × 30 × 34cm.

Those measurements should be checked against the equipment frame before purchase. Allow extra space for access to the recoil starter, fuel cap, air cleaner, oil fill/drain points, spark plug and electric-start wiring.

Where a replacement engine is heavier or its mass sits differently from the original, check the frame, vibration isolation and mounting hardware. Tight mounting bolts are important, but so is correct alignment with the driven machine.

What Is Included?

The current formal box-content list is simple:

  • 1 × Baumr-AG SX220E stationary petrol engine.

The compatible 12V 18Ah battery is specifically listed as not included.

Do not assume mounting bolts, pulley, coupling, clutch, throttle cable, battery leads, external fuel plumbing, protective guarding or machine-specific controls are included unless the seller expressly lists them.

This matters because the cost of adapting a replacement engine can become significant if the old driven components do not match.

SX220E vs the Recoil-Only SX220

Baumr-AG also lists an SX220 7HP stationary engine without the electric-start arrangement. The two models share many headline engine figures, including 210cc displacement, 3600rpm speed and 7HP maximum output.

The SX220E’s main practical difference is the addition of key electric starting, along with the need for a compatible battery and associated installation space.

If the machine is only started occasionally and easy recoil access is available, the simpler recoil-only version may be worth considering. If regular starting or operator convenience matters, the SX220E’s key start can be useful.

Do not assume the two engines have identical shaft or mounting dimensions without checking the current specifications for the exact SKU.

Maintenance Considerations

A replacement stationary engine still needs routine servicing. The exact maintenance schedule should come from the current manual supplied with the engine, but routine attention normally includes checking:

  • engine-oil level and condition;
  • air-cleaner condition;
  • spark plug;
  • fuel system and hoses;
  • mounting bolts and vibration;
  • throttle and stop controls;
  • electric-start wiring and battery condition;
  • muffler and exhaust condition; and
  • guards around driven components.

If vibration increases after installation, stop and check alignment rather than continuing to operate the machine. Misalignment can damage bearings, couplings, belts and shafts.

Buyer Checklist

  • Confirm the exact model is SX220E / ENGPTLBMRC21E.
  • Do not select it solely because the old engine was advertised as 7HP.
  • Compare the 6HP rated output and 3600rpm operating speed with the machine requirements.
  • Measure the old shaft diameter, length and keyway.
  • Obtain current SX220E shaft dimensions before ordering if they are not supplied.
  • Measure the mounting-hole pattern and available frame space.
  • Confirm shaft rotation and driven-equipment direction.
  • Check pulley, clutch, pump or coupling compatibility.
  • Plan appropriate guarding for rotating components.
  • Allow for a 12V 18Ah battery if using key start.
  • Check exhaust clearance and always operate in safe outdoor ventilation.
  • Confirm controls, throttle linkage and shutdown wiring.
  • Use the specified oil and fuel and follow the current manual.

Firebusters Practical Recommendation

The Baumr-AG SX220E has a useful specification for people looking for a 210cc horizontal-shaft replacement engine with both electric and recoil starting.

The published 7HP maximum output, 6HP rated output, 14Nm torque and 3600rpm speed provide much more useful information than the 7HP headline alone.

The biggest limitation in the current online specifications is that the exact shaft diameter, shaft length, keyway and mounting-hole measurements are not published. Those are the details that determine whether a replacement actually fits.

Our recommendation: consider the SX220E only after matching the physical shaft, mounting pattern, rotation, speed and rated output to the equipment being repaired. If those measurements cannot be confirmed before purchase, contact the supplier or choose an engine with a full dimensional drawing rather than relying on claims of a “standard” footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SX220E really 7HP?

The current specification lists 7HP / 5.1kW maximum output and 6HP / 4.4kW rated output. Both figures should be considered when matching the engine to equipment.

What is the engine capacity?

The SX220E is a 210cc single-cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke OHV engine.

What speed does it run at?
