2270kg vs 3500kg: The Load-Rating Conflict

The official T-REX manual lists a 3500kg maximum pulling-load capacity and a 272kg maximum direct load.

Those figures describe different concepts, but the 2270kg versus 3500kg pulling/vehicle figure still does not align cleanly across the current documentation.

Firebusters recommendation: use the lower 2270kg current merchant limit when assessing a purchase unless the rating plate and current manual supplied with your exact unit clearly authorise a higher load. Never exceed the 272kg direct load on the jockey wheel itself.

What Does the 272kg Direct Load Mean?

The 272kg figure is not the total trailer mass. It is the maximum direct downward load supported by the jockey-wheel assembly.

A caravan can have a total mass well above 272kg while placing only a fraction of that weight through the jockey wheel. What matters is that both the total moving load and the direct load remain within the applicable limits.

Do not assume the jockey wheel’s 272kg direct rating is the same as the tow vehicle’s permitted tow-ball download or the trailer’s coupling rating. Those are separate limits that must also be respected.

Battery: 18Ah, Not Simply “18A”

The current merchant listing uses the wording “12V / 18A” for minimum operating battery power. The official manual is clearer: it recommends a 12VDC battery with at least 18Ah capacity.

Single-Axle Only

The current Edisons listing says the powered jockey wheel is not suitable for dual-axle caravans.

A tandem axle resists tight turning differently from a single axle because multiple tyres must scrub or slip sideways during a pivot. That can greatly increase the effort required from a small powered jockey wheel and the stress applied to the mounting arrangement.

Before buying, check:

• available mounting space on the A-frame or drawbar;
• clearance when the unit is raised and lowered;
• whether mounting holes or drilling will be required;
• structural suitability of the attachment point;
