The current Edisons listing gives a product weight of approximately 9.5kg. The BAUMR-AG manual lists a 1–1.5 second cutting speed and a 2.5 second full cycle time, so those two timing figures should not be treated as contradictory.

The most important limitation is not diameter—it is steel grade. The official manual states that these cutters are for maximum Grade 60 steel reinforcing bar only, and warns against cutting ungraded bar or rebar harder, thicker or thinner than specified.

Critical Australian Rebar Grade Check

The RB16T manual does not simply say “any 4–16mm reinforcing bar”. It states that rebar cutters covered by the manual are to be used on maximum Grade 60 steel reinforcing bars only.

ASTM Grade 60 reinforcing bar is commonly identified as Grade 420 in metric terms, with a minimum yield strength of approximately 420MPa.

Australian reinforcing steel supplied to AS/NZS 4671 commonly includes Grade 500N, a 500MPa yield-strength class.

Those grades are not automatically interchangeable. Diameter alone does not prove suitability.

Firebusters recommendation: if your project uses Australian 500N reinforcing bar, obtain confirmation from BAUMR-AG/Edisons for the exact bar grade before relying on the RB16T. Do not assume that “16mm maximum” means 16mm 500N is manufacturer-approved.

Retailer Says Chains, Bolts and Rods — Manual Says Rebar Only

The current Edisons and BAUMR-AG marketing text says the RB16T can cut rebar “plus chains, bolts and rods”.

The official manual gives stricter instructions: use maximum Grade 60 steel reinforcing bars only, do not cut ungraded rebar, and do not use the cutter on other kinds of metal or materials.

For a safety-led guide, the instruction manual should take priority over broad promotional wording.

Firebusters position: treat the RB16T as a rebar cutter, not a general-purpose bolt, chain or rod shear, unless BAUMR-AG provides specific current documentation authorising the exact material.

Cutting Speed vs Cycle Time

The current listing and manual give both 1–1.5 seconds cutting speed and a 2.5 second cycle time.

Those figures describe different parts of the operation. The shorter figure represents the cutting action, while the cycle figure includes the piston movement and return sequence.

The manual explains that the trigger is held while the piston advances and cuts the rebar. After the cut, releasing the trigger allows the piston to retract automatically. The switch cannot be reactivated until the piston has fully retracted.

This means the 2.5-second figure is a better planning figure for a full repeated cut cycle than treating 1–1.5 seconds as total cut-to-ready time.

Correct Rebar Positioning and the Stopper Bolt

The manual describes the adjustable stopper as one of the most important parts of the cutter.

For each rebar diameter, the bar must be inserted fully into the U-shaped support and kept at approximately 90 degrees to the front cutter block. The stopper is then adjusted until it contacts the rebar.

Changing to a different bar diameter requires the stopper to be reset.

The manual warns that incorrect stopper adjustment can cause excessive cutter-block wear, piston/cylinder damage and an increased risk of the cut end flying out.

This is a good example of why a hydraulic rebar cutter should not be treated as a simple “insert bar and pull trigger” tool.

Flying Offcuts Are a Real Hazard

The BAUMR-AG manual specifically warns that short cut lengths can shoot out.

It identifies pieces around 30cm or less as requiring particular care and recommends safety screens to protect other people in the work area.

Keep the likely discharge direction clear. Do not position co-workers, vehicles, glazing or other vulnerable equipment in line with the cut end.

Wear suitable eye protection. The manual specifically refers to safety goggles, safety glasses with side shields or a face shield.

When cutting at height, the manual also calls for a safety screen beneath the rebar to control falling or flying pieces.

240V Electrical Setup

The RB16T specification table lists 240V, 850W continuous power and 900W maximum power.

The manual identifies the RB16T motor as double insulated, but still requires the power source to match the cutter and the cord, plug and extension leads to be kept in good condition.

It recommends using an RCD wherever possible and warns against use in rain, damp areas or with wet hands.

Do not carry the cutter by its electrical cord. Route the lead away from sharp rebar ends, hot surfaces and the cutting head.

The “16 Tonne” Claim

The current merchant and BAUMR-AG product pages describe the RB16T as having a 16-tonne drive unit.

That figure is not repeated in the model specification table in the current user manual, which lists voltage, power, cutting range and timing.

For that reason, Firebusters treats 16 tonnes as a supplier-published hydraulic-force claim, not an independently verified performance measurement.

More importantly, the published force does not expand the permitted material range. The manual’s Grade 60 and 4–16mm restrictions still apply.

Cutter Blocks: Four Edges Before Replacement

The maintenance section provides useful detail that the original draft missed.

Each cutter block has four cutting edges. Before use, the two retaining bolts on each block should be checked for tightness.

If an edge becomes dull or chipped, the manual instructs the user to remove the retaining bolts and rotate both cutter blocks so fresh edges are presented.

When all four edges have been used—or if either block is cracked or damaged—both cutter blocks should be replaced.

Edisons currently lists a replacement blade/cutter-block set under part number P-RBCBLD-16T for SKU RBCHDRBMRA16T. Parts can change between batches, so visual matching with the existing blocks is recommended before ordering.

Hydraulic Oil Maintenance

The RB16T depends on correct hydraulic-oil level to maintain cutting pressure.

The manual recommends checking oil level frequently, preferably daily. It specifies 20-weight hydraulic oil with anti-foam and anti-abrasion properties and refers to ISO VG46-type oil in its oil-level procedure.

The hydraulic oil should be changed at least once a year, sooner if it becomes dirty.

If hydraulic oil temperature rises above about 70°C, the manual says cutting power can drop and the unit should be allowed to cool.

Never remove the oil plug while the cutter is hot because pressurised hot oil may discharge.

Maintenance Schedule from the Manual

Cleaning: Do Not Blow Metal Filings Around

The manual recommends daily cleaning and specifically warns against using compressed air to blow debris away because metal filings and dust can be driven into the eyes or respiratory system.

Disconnect the cutter from power before cleaning. Wipe or brush dirt and filings away, paying particular attention around the piston area.

The manual also says never to use the cutter on rebar embedded in wet concrete.

Commercial Marketing vs Warranty Terms

The RB16T product page uses trade and commercial language, but BAUMR-AG’s current warranty policy draws an important distinction.

BAUMR-AG currently states a 12-month warranty for private household use, unless otherwise noted, while use for commercial purposes qualifies for a 3-month warranty period.

The optional paid “2-year Extended Warranty” is actually a 1+1 arrangement that adds one year after the initial 12 months, and BAUMR-AG says it is for residential use rather than commercial use.

Trade buyers should therefore check warranty conditions carefully rather than assuming “commercial-grade” marketing means a two-year commercial warranty.

The RB16T has a clear published machine specification: 240V, 850W continuous power, 900W maximum output, 4–16mm cutting range, 1–1.5 second cutting stroke, 2.5 second cycle time and 9.5kg current listed product weight.

What makes this purchase less straightforward for an Australian buyer is the rebar-grade wording. The official manual says maximum Grade 60 reinforcing steel. Australian projects commonly use 500N reinforcing steel, and the current documentation does not explicitly map that Australian grade to the RB16T’s approved range.

The manual also contradicts the merchant’s general-metal marketing by saying not to cut other metals or ungraded rebar.

Our recommendation: the RB16T is worth considering only when the exact reinforcement grade and diameter have been confirmed compatible. For Australian 500N bar, obtain written supplier/manufacturer confirmation before purchase or use. Once compatibility is established, follow the manual closely on stopper adjustment, flying-offcut control, cutter-block inspection and hydraulic maintenance.
