The exact model-specific vibration frequency and amplitude should be confirmed with BAUMR-AG if those values are important for an engineered concreting specification.

What Does a Concrete Poker Vibrator Do?

Fresh concrete can contain entrapped air after mixing and placement. Proper compaction helps the concrete fill around reinforcement and formwork and reduces unwanted voids.

Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia explains that concrete compaction is used to remove entrapped air and help achieve the required density, strength and durability.

An immersion or poker vibrator works by inserting the vibrating head into the fresh concrete so vibration temporarily reduces internal friction and allows trapped air to rise.

It is a concrete-consolidation tool. It is not intended to be used as a powered device for pushing concrete long distances around the form.

Do Not Use the Poker to Move Concrete

Concrete should be placed as close as reasonably practical to its final position.

CCAA specifically advises that poker vibrators should not be used to move concrete into position.

Dragging or pushing concrete around using the vibrator can contribute to segregation, where aggregate and cement paste separate rather than remaining uniformly distributed.

Place the concrete properly first, then use vibration for consolidation.

Insertion Technique Matters

There is no single universal number of seconds that this CVB760 should be held at every insertion point.

Concrete consistency, aggregate size, placement depth, reinforcement spacing, vibrator diameter, frequency and amplitude all affect consolidation.

General good practice includes:

• insert the head into fresh concrete rather than dragging it across the surface;
• use sufficiently close insertion points so the effective vibration areas overlap;
• allow the vibrator to penetrate into the previous layer where concrete is being placed in lifts;
• withdraw the poker steadily rather than abruptly; and
• stop when adequate consolidation has been achieved rather than continuing without purpose.

For structural concrete, follow the project’s concrete specification and the direction of the responsible builder, engineer or concreting supervisor.

Over-Vibration Can Also Cause Problems

More vibration is not automatically better.

Unnecessary or poorly controlled vibration can contribute to segregation in susceptible mixes, bring excess mortar toward the surface or disturb formwork.

The correct amount depends on the concrete and placement method.

That is another reason not to turn an engine-speed number into a universal operating instruction.

Formwork and Reinforcement

A poker vibrator operates inside a formwork system that may contain reinforcement, penetrations, cast-in components and temporary supports.

Fuel Requirements

The CVB760 is a two-stroke petrol machine.

The manufacturer specifies:

• regular unleaded petrol;
• 95+ RON;
• quality two-stroke engine oil; and
• a 25:1 petrol-to-oil ratio.

The manual says two-stroke fuel should be premixed before being placed in the tank.

As examples, a 25:1 ratio means approximately:

• 1L petrol to 40mL two-stroke oil;
• 2L petrol to 80mL oil; or
• 5L petrol to 200mL oil.

Do not refuel while the engine is running or hot. Keep petrol away from flames, sparks and other ignition sources.

The Manual Contains Generic Engine Information

The CVB760 manual is shared with several BAUMR-AG petrol-powered products.

Some generic sections discuss four-stroke engine oil as well as two-stroke fuel.

The CVB760’s specific product specifications identify it as a 25:1 two-stroke premix machine.

Always follow the instructions that apply specifically to the CVB760 rather than assuming every generic engine instruction applies to this model.

Vibration Exposure and Operator Fatigue

The machine weighs approximately 11kg and is supplied with an ergonomic handle and shoulder strap.

Those features may help distribute the load, but they do not eliminate exposure to vibration or repetitive physical effort.

Safe Work Australia notes that workplace exposure to hand-arm vibration from vibrating tools can contribute to musculoskeletal and vascular problems.
