BAUMR-AG BMT-85 Portable Workbench: Australian Buyer’s Guide

On this page

Australian Buyer’s Guide

The BAUMR-AG BMT-85 portable multifunction workbench combines a folding worktable and sawhorse in one unit. It is aimed at home workshops, renovators and people who need a temporary work surface that can be packed away when the job is finished.

The interesting part is not just that it folds. The BMT-85 has eight working heights from 60 to 92cm, an 18mm MDF worktop, supplied clamps and bench dogs, plus separate published load ratings of 100kg in worktable mode and 454kg in sawhorse mode.

Quick verdict

Best suited to: DIY projects, renovation work and smaller workshops where portability, adjustable height and useful clamping matter more than having a large permanent bench.
At 16kg it is portable, but it is not an ultra-light work stand.
The biggest thing buyers need to understand is that the 454kg rating applies to sawhorse mode, not the MDF worktable surface.

What Comes With the BMT-85?

The current manufacturer listing includes more accessories than the word “workbench” might suggest.

  • 1 × BMT-85 multifunction worktable
  • 4 × bench dogs
  • 2 × quick F-clamps
  • 2 × joiner links
  • 2 × sawhorse support arms
  • integrated lower storage tray

No initial assembly is required. The bench is designed to unfold into position rather than arrive as a flat-pack project.

100kg Worktable vs 454kg Sawhorse: What Does That Mean?

This is probably the most important specification to understand.

BAUMR-AG gives the BMT-85 two very different load ratings.
In normal worktable mode, with the MDF surface opened, the published maximum capacity is 100kg.

With the table converted into sawhorse mode, BAUMR-AG publishes a much higher 454kg maximum capacity.

Do not read the 454kg figure as permission to place 454kg on the MDF worktop. They are different configurations and different ratings.

Important:
the BMT-85 manual confirms the two numerical ratings, but does not provide detailed point-load or load-distribution test data. Stay within the relevant mode rating and avoid concentrating very heavy loads in a small area.

Eight Height Settings Are More Useful Than They Sound

Each leg adjusts independently, with eight published working heights between approximately 60 and 92cm.

That gives the BMT-85 an advantage over many basic folding benches that have one fixed working height.
A lower setting can suit some assembly or support tasks, while a higher setting may be more comfortable for marking, clamping or lighter work.

Independent adjustment can also help level the bench when the underlying surface is not perfectly even.

There is an important qualification though: the BMT-85 manual tells the operator to check that the table is horizontal before using it.
Adjustable legs should therefore be treated as a levelling feature, not permission to use the table unstable on a steep or badly broken surface.

Clamping and Material Support

A portable workbench becomes far more useful when you can actually secure the material to it.
The BMT-85 provides several ways to do that.

Four bench dogs can be positioned around the perforated worktop, while the two supplied quick F-clamps can be used with the integrated aluminium rail.
The manual confirms that the quick clamps and clamp dogs can also be used together.

This gives the table useful flexibility for timber, panels and suitable irregular-shaped pieces during measuring, assembly, drilling or cutting preparation.

The worktop also includes material slots and a 180-degree angle guide. We would treat the printed angle guide as a convenient reference rather than a replacement for a proper square or measuring tool where precision matters.

Can You Join More Than One BMT-85 Together?

Yes. BAUMR-AG supplies two joiner links and describes the BMT-85 as capable of connecting multiple units side-by-side or end-to-end.

This could be useful when supporting wider panels or creating a larger temporary assembly surface.

There is another useful configuration shown in the manual. The supplied support arms are designed so two sawhorses can support suitable 2×4 timber to form a larger jobsite-style table.

That does mean you need two compatible units for that particular setup. One BMT-85 alone does not create the long 2×4-supported table shown in the manufacturer instructions.

How Portable Is It Really?

The BMT-85 folds to roughly 65 × 64 × 19cm and weighs about 16kg.

That should make it much easier to store against a workshop wall or carry in a suitable ute or van than a fixed workbench.
But 16kg is still enough weight that we would describe it as portable rather than lightweight.

The manual specifically recommends carrying the folded unit vertically and close to the body.

If you expect to move the bench several times every day, the 16kg weight is worth considering before purchase.

The MDF Worktop Needs Some Care

The 70 × 65cm work surface is made from 18mm MDF.
MDF provides a flat, useful work surface, but it should not be treated like a weatherproof outdoor benchtop.

BAUMR-AG’s manual specifically states that the equipment is not weather-proof and should not be stored in damp, humid or high-temperature conditions or prolonged direct sunlight.

That matters particularly with the MDF top because repeated moisture exposure can lead to swelling and deterioration.

Using the BMT-85 temporarily outside is different from leaving it stored outdoors. Once the job is finished, we would fold it up and keep it somewhere dry.

What to Know Before Buying

  • 100kg is the worktable rating. The higher 454kg rating applies to sawhorse mode.
  • It weighs 16kg. Portable, yes, but not especially light.
  • The worktop is MDF. Keep it dry and store it under cover.
  • The manual specifies domestic use. Buyers needing continuous commercial duty should check whether a purpose-built trade system better fits their work.
  • It must be level in use. Independent legs help adjustment, but the manual says the table should be horizontal before work begins.
  • The surface is 70 × 65cm. Large sheets and long timber will still need appropriate additional support.
  • No permanent machinery mounting instructions are published. Do not assume the table is an approved fixed stand for machinery simply because the load number looks high.

Using It With Workshop Saws?

A portable workbench can provide useful material support and clamping, but it does not replace the guarding, fences, stands or workholding required by the cutting machine itself.

If you are choosing equipment for timber cutting, see our

Workshop Saw Comparison and Safety Guide

for the differences between table saws, mitre saws and bandsaws.

Practical Safety Checks Before Use

  • Check that the table is horizontal and stable before placing a load on it.
  • Make sure all legs are fully opened and correctly positioned.
  • Use the correct load rating for the configuration being used.
  • Secure workpieces properly before drilling, cutting or applying force.
  • Use extra support for long or oversized materials where required.
  • Inspect clamps, legs, hinges and the worktop for damage before use.
  • Keep the working area clear of trip hazards.
  • Use eye, hearing, respiratory and other PPE appropriate to the actual tool and material being worked on.
  • Do not use damaged equipment until it has been repaired or replaced.

BAUMR-AG BMT-85: Strengths and Limitations

What we like

  • Workbench and sawhorse in one unit
  • Eight working heights from 60–92cm
  • Independent leg adjustment
  • Two supplied F-clamps
  • Four bench dogs
  • Joiner system for multiple tables
  • Compact 65 × 64 × 19cm folded size
  • No assembly required
  • Integrated tool shelf

Things to consider

  • 100kg worktable rating is much lower than the sawhorse rating
  • 16kg is noticeable if moved frequently
  • MDF top needs protection from moisture
  • 70 × 65cm is not a large permanent workbench surface
  • Manual describes the product as domestic-use equipment
  • Two units are needed for the larger 2×4-supported table configuration

Who Should Consider the BMT-85?

The BMT-85 makes the most sense for someone who needs their workspace to disappear when the job is over.

A home renovator could use it for clamping and assembly during a project and then fold it against a shed wall.
Someone working from a ute or van may appreciate having a genuine work surface without transporting a conventional bench.

It also makes sense in garages where floor space is shared with vehicles and a permanent bench is not practical.

Who may be better with something else?

  • Permanent workshop: a fixed bench offers more area, storage and mounting options.
  • Very frequent transport: a lighter folding stand may be easier to carry.
  • Very long stock: dedicated saw stands or additional roller/support stands may be more practical.
  • Commercial daily use: compare equipment specifically documented for continuous trade or industrial use.
  • Outdoor storage: choose something designed to tolerate weather rather than exposing an MDF worktop to moisture.

Our Final Verdict

The BAUMR-AG BMT-85 offers more versatility than a simple pair of folding sawhorses.
Its adjustable height, integrated clamping system, worktop and ability to convert into sawhorse mode make it useful for workshops where space changes from job to job.

The published 454kg sawhorse rating sounds impressive, but the more relevant figure for many buyers is the 100kg worktable rating.
Understanding that difference prevents the headline number becoming misleading.

We also like that BAUMR-AG publishes the actual 16kg product weight and compact folded dimensions, which makes it easier to decide whether it will realistically fit your shed, garage or vehicle.

Recommendation: worth considering for DIYers, renovators and home workshops needing a compact and genuinely adjustable temporary work surface. Buyers wanting a large permanent bench, very light carrying weight or heavy commercial-duty equipment should look at alternatives.
