This guide compares six BAUMR-AG hydraulic log splitters covering electric, petrol and diesel models from 6 tonnes through to the HDS800, which has a published 43-tonne rated splitting force and 65-tonne maximum tested force.

BAUMR-AG Hercules HDS800 Diesel Log Splitter
The HDS800 is the largest diesel model in this comparison. Its current specification is considerably more detailed than the older Firebusters page suggested.

65 Tonnes Does Not Mean Every Log Will Split
This is probably the most important point in the HDS800 comparison.
The current specification gives:
- 43 tonnes rated splitting force
- 65 tonnes maximum tested splitting force
Those are not the same specification.
We would therefore describe the HDS800 as a splitter with a 43-tonne rated force and 65-tonne maximum tested force, rather than simply implying that 65 tonnes is continuously available in every operating condition.
The manufacturer’s 650mm log-diameter figure is also expressly species-dependent.
Horizontal or Vertical Splitting
The HDS800 can operate with the beam in horizontal or vertical position.
Vertical operation can be particularly useful when a large round is too heavy to comfortably lift onto a horizontal beam. The log can instead be positioned near ground level.
That does not eliminate manual-handling risk. Large firewood rounds can still be unstable, heavy and awkward to reposition.
- Use the position specified by the manufacturer for the task.
- Keep hands and feet away from the wedge and ram.
- Do not use hands or feet to hold an unstable log while the ram is moving.
- Do not place any part of the body within the crushing zone.
Removable Four-Way Wedge
The HDS800 includes a removable four-way wedge.
For suitable straight-grained logs this can allow a round to be divided into several pieces during a splitting stroke.
It should not be described as guaranteeing four perfect pieces from every log. Knots, irregular grain and timber diameter can substantially alter the result.
Towing Is for Property and Off-Road Movement
The HDS800 includes:
- 50mm tow coupling
- 16-inch pneumatic wheels
- 8-inch fold-away jockey wheel
- integrated jockey-wheel brake
- Australian-style seven-pin flat electrical connection
Those features make movement around a rural property easier, but they do not turn the HDS800 into a road trailer.
The manual also says the hydraulic ram assembly must be secured in the horizontal position before towing.
Use an appropriate towing vehicle, secure the coupling properly and avoid unsafe slopes, ditches or rough terrain.
Delivery and Assembly Need Planning
This is a 300kg machine supplied in a shipping crate weighing approximately 330kg.
Before ordering, think about more than whether a courier can reach your address.
- How will the crate be unloaded?
- Can the delivery vehicle access the property?
- Do you have mechanical assistance or enough people for assembly?
- Can the completed 300kg splitter be moved safely to its operating area?
- Where will it be stored?

Diesel and Hydraulic Maintenance
The HDS800 requires both engine and hydraulic maintenance.
Current specifications list:

Hydraulic Crushing and Injection Hazards
Hydraulic machinery can cause severe crush injuries through normal operation, unexpected movement or stored hydraulic pressure.
Keep clear of the ram, wedge and other potential crush zones while the machine is operating.
For inspection and maintenance:
- Shut the machine down.
- Isolate energy sources.
- Relieve stored hydraulic pressure as directed by the manufacturer.
- Never place yourself beneath or between components supported only by hydraulics.
Do not use your bare hand to search for a suspected hydraulic leak. Pressurised fluid can penetrate tissue and cause serious internal injury.
If hydraulic injection injury is suspected, seek urgent medical treatment.
Other BAUMR-AG Log Splitters
HPS700 40T Petrol
The HPS700 provides petrol-powered horizontal and vertical splitting. It may suit larger private properties where high firewood volumes are processed but diesel power and the 300kg HDS800 are unnecessary.
HPS4500E 20T Electric
The HPS4500E offers substantially greater published force than the smaller electric machines while avoiding petrol or diesel engine maintenance. Confirm the current electrical requirements and your available supply before purchase.

BAUMR-AG’s current general warranty terms are more specific:

- Optional two-year extended warranty: where offered, this is a 1+1 arrangement and is restricted to residential use under the published conditions

Final Assessment
The HDS800 fills the top end of this BAUMR-AG comparison, but its most useful specification is not simply the headline “65 tonne” figure.
The detailed specification gives a 43-tonne rated splitting force and 65-tonne maximum tested force, together with a 550mm maximum log length, species-dependent 650mm diameter, horizontal/vertical operation and 18-second cycle.
At 300kg, it is a substantial rural machine requiring delivery planning, storage space, engine servicing and hydraulic maintenance. Its towing equipment is intended for property and off-road movement rather than public-road transport.
Our recommendation: choose the HDS800 only where the amount and difficulty of your firewood justify a machine of this size. For normal residential firewood, one of the smaller electric or petrol models may provide a better balance of capacity, storage, maintenance and cost.
