ROSSI Welders and Plasma Cutters Compared

This guide compares three different ROSSI workshop machines: the CT-416 Mk III welder and plasma cutter, the MIG-140 multi-process welder and the higher-output MIG-300P.

The model names and maximum amperage do not tell the whole story. Buyers should compare processes, duty cycle, electrical supply, included equipment and the accessories required to perform each type of welding safely.

Testing statement: Firebusters has not personally tested these machines. Specifications come from current supplier listings and should be confirmed before purchase.

Understanding “300A”: The MIG-300P is listed at 300A with a 25% duty cycle. Its published 100% duty-cycle output is 150A. Maximum amperage alone should not be used to compare workload capacity.

Quick Selection Guide

  • Choose the CT-416 when plasma cutting, DC TIG and MMA are the required processes.
  • Choose the MIG-140 for lower-output gas or gasless wire welding, MMA and optional lift TIG.
  • Choose the MIG-300P when higher maximum MIG output, 0.6–1.0mm wire compatibility and MMA are priorities.
  • Choose another machine when AC TIG aluminium welding, industrial production or specialised certified work is required.

The CT-416 does not provide MIG welding. The MIG-140 and MIG-300P do not provide plasma cutting. The MIG-300P is not listed as a TIG machine.

MIG-300P Output and Material Claims

The supplier describes the MIG-300P as capable of joining material up to 14mm. This is a supplier claim rather than an independently verified universal capacity.

Actual capability depends on:

  • Base-metal type and condition
  • Joint design and preparation
  • Wire type and diameter
  • Shielding gas or flux-cored wire
  • Polarity and machine settings
  • Number of weld passes
  • Operator competence
  • Required structural or engineering standard

Do not assume that the machine can safely complete every 14mm structural joint. Critical work should follow a qualified welding procedure and any required inspection.

Included Equipment

CT-416 Mk III

The current package lists TIG and plasma torches, an MMA holder, return clamp, air hose, selected tips and collets, goggles and a wire brush. A compressor, shielding-gas cylinder and gas regulator are not listed.

MIG-140

The package lists a MIG torch, electrode holder, return clamp, contact tips, shield cups, five electrodes, a hose, goggles and a wire brush. The TIG torch, tungsten and gas regulator are not included.

MIG-300P

The current package lists an electrode holder, MIG torch, return clamp, handheld mask and wire brush. Welding wire, shielding-gas equipment and a regulator are not listed.

Eye protection: Do not assume supplied goggles or a handheld mask provide suitable protection for every process. Use a compliant welding helmet or face shield with the correct filter shade.

Electrical and Generator Requirements

All three current listings specify 15A plugs. A compliant 15A outlet is required.

  • Never alter or remove the larger earth pin.
  • Do not use an unapproved 10A-to-15A adaptor.
  • Have required electrical work completed by a licensed electrician.
  • Use suitable RCD protection where required.
  • Inspect plugs, leads and insulation before operation.
  • Keep the machines and electrical connections dry.
  • Use extension leads rated for the load, length and environment.

A generator’s stated kVA does not by itself prove compatibility. Confirm real output, voltage stability, earthing, RCD arrangements and manufacturer requirements.

Critical Welding and Cutting Safety

Hot-work warning: Welding and plasma cutting can ignite material beyond the immediate work point. Remove combustibles, control sparks and inspect for hidden or smouldering fire after finishing.
  • Obtain practical instruction before using any welding process.
  • Read the machine, torch and consumable manuals.
  • Wear a suitable helmet, flame-resistant clothing, gloves and enclosed protective footwear.
  • Use screens to protect other people from arc radiation and sparks.
  • Keep a suitable fire extinguisher available.
  • Never weld or cut a sealed container, gas cylinder, fuel tank or unknown vessel.
  • Secure gas cylinders upright and protect their valves.
  • Keep hoses and cables away from heat, sharp edges and traffic.
  • Allow welded components and offcuts to cool in a controlled location.
  • Isolate power before maintenance or internal adjustments.

Welding Fumes

Welding fumes can cause cancer and other serious illness. Open doors or general workshop airflow may not provide sufficient protection.

  • Use effective local exhaust ventilation near the fume source.
  • Keep your breathing zone out of the rising plume.
  • Identify the base metal, coating and consumables.
  • Do not weld painted, galvanised, plated or contaminated metal without controlling the additional hazards.
  • Use correctly selected respiratory protection where required.
  • Prevent fumes from exposing other workers or household members.

Safe Work Australia publishes an eight-hour exposure standard of 1mg/m³ for total welding fumes, subject to implementation by each jurisdiction. This maximum limit does not replace the duty to minimise exposure.

  • Confirm the exact model and supplier SKU.
  • Check access to a compliant 15A outlet.
  • Select the welding and cutting processes actually required.
  • Compare duty cycle rather than maximum amperage alone.
  • Confirm wire, spool, electrode and polarity compatibility.
  • Check all included torches, leads and consumables.
  • Confirm shielding-gas and regulator requirements.
  • For plasma cutting, confirm compressor pressure and airflow.
  • Assess ventilation, fumes, sparks and fire exposure.
  • Confirm replacement consumables and service support.
  • Confirm the current warranty terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which model provides plasma cutting?

Only the CT-416 Mk III provides plasma cutting in this comparison.

Which models provide wire-feed welding?

The MIG-140 and MIG-300P provide gas or gasless wire-feed welding.

Does the MIG-300P operate continuously at 300A?

No. Its published duty cycle is 25% at 300A and 100% at 150A under the supplier’s stated test conditions.

Can these machines use a normal 10A outlet?

No. All three current listings specify a 15A plug.

Can they TIG-weld aluminium?

The CT-416 and MIG-140 are DC machines and do not provide conventional AC TIG aluminium capability. The MIG-300P is not listed as a TIG machine.

Final Assessment

The CT-416 offers the widest combination of welding and cutting processes. The MIG-140 provides a compact entry into wire-feed, MMA and optional lift TIG. The MIG-300P adds higher maximum MIG output, but its 300A rating applies at a 25% duty cycle.

The best choice depends on process requirements, duty cycle, electrical supply, accessories, ventilation and operator competence—not simply the largest number printed on the machine.
